This was the scene every morning in our house, Carl and I sleeping with 2 kids and a dog.
Cameron (in Basinette) slept through the night at 3wks old and never looked back. While Alex never slept through the night until he was 5.
There was comfort in having everyone in one bed.
We don't regret it.

Preamble:
A few months ago my Husband Carl forwarded me a link to a web site that one of his colleagues at his super-duper, geek-a-leeka, IT, client-server job had sent to him. Now among the computer folk the amazing sites get passed around very quickly. In the non-geek computer circuit the sites get passed around at moderate speed, but in giant user lists left over from the last chain letter they sent. I am not sure which of these ways of passing information gets the word out there, about a cool site, faster. I guess I will have to do an experiment with the high tech Internet "telephone" game.

Today I will publish my blog post on my site.
I will send out my blog action note to my big honkin reader list. I will then send my Husband one email with the link to the blog post on it to forward to the colleagues. Lastly I will send this blog link out to a bunch of my friends who send me cute little jokes and medical reports, and memes, and chainletters so they can forward it.

For this experiment I would really appreciate it if you would leave a comment here on the blog, and if you are a blogger sign in on the linky. At the end of all this I will pass the information on to this wonderful artist that I want to tell you about. What would be really great is if you could send him a note on the email on his site, or in the comments section of his blog, so he can get feedback from those of you who don't have websites or blogs for contact.

I really want to see how many people can look at his site in a 48 hr period, from one nudge on the net.



The World Of Martin Waugh

I was so enthralled by the beautiful things I saw on this man's sight, I have been compelled to share it with you. I wish that real life would have allowed me to publish this when I first wanted to….But you all know how unpredictable life is….

As unpredictable as the most organic feelings of peace I felt on the day I opened up Martin's Site. Liquid Sculpture.......When one puts their mind to it, you can't imagine how to make liquid, this flowing and ebbing constant motion only shaped by a meniscus for a moment, making any sort of static shape! Martin did it! He didn't put the liquid in a gel, he didn't freeze it into a shape. He captured it like a wild beast, in high speed resolution, with light boxes, in static pictures to tame that beast. Frozen moments of time, with just the right light, and just the right liquid to create the most immense beauty from motion.

This is science. Martin has a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics. We all know that only a wondrous few can make it through a degree in physics. The one degree where the educated must attain knowledge in mathematics, science of energy, motion, strength, time and the limits that gravity poses to Man on this earth.

I have been so fortunate to be able to interview Martin about his work. This is what he had to say:

Q: How long have you been taking photographs?

A: On and off for 40 years. I've been doing the liquid sculpture images for about five years.




Q: How long have you been using digital (I am assuming)?

A: Yes, I use digital (I could never have made mistakes fast enough to develop my techniques with film.) I have been shooting digital for about 6 years.



Q: What kind of Camera do you use?

A: I have used pretty much the full line of Canon's high-end consumer digital SLRs: D60, 10D, 20D, and 5D.



Q: Did you hand-make a lot of the things you use like light boxes etc?

A: I have made almost all of my equipment: light boxes, stage, dropping devices, timing and triggering electronics, computer programs to control it all. The flashes are stock flashes (Vivitar 285HV), but I have modified them for manual control of flash duration.



Q: Did you ever expect that other people would be so consumed by your work?

A: Friends and I have always thought that these images should be pretty much universally appealing, but I have been happily overwhelmed by people's reactions. People of all ages, all nationalities, and cultures can relate to the forms. Visitors to my web site hail from over a hundred countries. It gives me pause. It must be a fundamental connection. Perhaps primordial. Perhaps it is a visual connection to our balance system in the inner ear – the liquid forms exactly reflect the perfect balance of forces at play. I think that we feel the balance that they show us and it is relaxing and invigorating.



Q: Do you have an interesting story to share that happened because of the art?

A: I started my still-born blog with a story of one of my favourite experiences:

You have to read the story in his blog. It is such a great statement to how this type of image can change kids' lives!

I was a science geek. I don't know about you, but even in the sciences in high school and college, I found physics dry and tense, and so extremely detailed that I found it a bit frightening! I was never sure if I was understanding the formulas or concepts until I was in my second year of college! By then I was using the tools of physics to do applications pertaining to my future job, and the information gelled.

Till now, I was at a loss on how to make physics interesting for younger kids, and older folk who know nothing about physics but possibly Newton's law, because it was on a commercial on TV. I have used physics with the late teens while teaching my Driver Education class. For them, understanding that math and physics is all there is to, the motion of, driving could be daunting, but when they see it drawn on the board it finally all makes sense.

A picture…... Make it into a picture, and people can understand!
In this world we see images created to teach us all day, every day……teach us about new products, about what the new trend the competitive people need to keep up with the 'Joneses' is this week. We see pictures showing us where to go. We see images that make us curious to learn more. And we see moving pieces that entertain us daily. So why not take a moving image and break it down into its parts, so we can see the event, and not just the product.

That is what Martin Waugh has done. He has captured fluid in its static form, within its motion. To create the most beautiful and peaceful images anyone can imagine. His photos capture the purest essence of form.
Sometimes when I look at the images I hear music in my mind or my memory reminds me of a smell these images feel like. I bet you can look through all the photos and find one photo in there that you can say, "That photo represents me, my personality, my point of view." Please look at the series of photos in this sight. When you comment please tell us the name of the photo that represents you, or you liked the most.

Martin says that he produces logos for businesses with his photos as well. I bet Motivated Motion could use liquid as a logo-ehh? Ooo something for me to ponder!

45 Years Went So Fast!

This year my Mom and Dad have been married 45 years. Their anniversary is August 25th, 1961. I asked my parents if I could borrow their wedding album, so I could scan the photos to make digital records of them.

Now asking for this album does not come without the telling of the story on how it was set up.
You all know from my other blogs, that my Grandmother was a designer, and she designed the Wedding Party Dresses, and the Wedding Dress. My Grandfather was a photography buff, and wanted to do the photography for the Wedding. But my Grandfather is plagued by wedding disaster. At my Aunt's wedding (before Mom's) my Grandfather forgot to put the film in his camera, and at my Mom's the film came off the capstan in the camera(or visa versa). Thus none of his daughters had their Wedding photographs as he had planned.

All was not lost. Other folks at the Wedding had taken photos, so Mom and Dad got some. Of course because they were just regular photo-printed off the negatives, none of the sizes are consistant. There were no lovely 8x10's or 5x7's. There were 1 1/2 x 2's and 2x3's. Once we took out the album, after 45 years, we were disappointed by how much the album pictures had faded.

I set out on the job to digitally scan each photo, put them in some sort of order, and do a primary colour restoration. Then when I had done that I finished them off as all 5x7's.

Alex says I will be able to restore them more, when I get deeper into my photoshop studies tutorial. Until then, I am very happy with my first crack at the restorations. They are definitely brighter and crisper.

As I scanned the photos it dawned on me that my Grandmother problably made way more than just the Wedding party dresses, and veil, and headpieces. She definitely made her own outfit and hat, and it is not unlikely that she may have made my Dad's Mom's dress as well. I would expect she made all of the bouquets and the table centrepieces, and the wedding cake too! Yes I get it from my Grandmother for sure!(even my looks at the age I am today). Mom will let me know the scoop on that once she sees this post.

If you have been watching this blog for along time, you will already know that I wore my Mother's Wedding Dress, with a veil my Grandmother made for another friend of the family(Brenda's). I redesigned the sleeves, and used remnent material from the original satin bolts my grandmother left with the dress to age(with the help of our friend Brenda, who is an awesome seamstress). My shoulders were a few inches wider than my Mom's and the cap sleeves were way too tight. I put one picture of Carl and I in the set here so you can do a comparison.

My parents were married in Scarborough, Ontario. They had their reception at the famous Guild Inn. In the area of Guildwood, on the Scarborough Bluffs. Their reception was in the Artist Cottage, for those of you who are familiar with the Greater Toronto Area, and its famous sites.

Wow, My Great Grandmother(Mom's Dad's Mom) is in the box hat on the far left, then Uncle Charlie Wilson, and my Grandfather Syd Wilson, Mom and Dad, then I think my Dad's Grandmother (Granny Ascott). She is the Mother of my Father's real Dad(Charles Lundy), who was killed in WWII when Dad was 18months old.
Alot of the women in my family have different last names than their children. At least three of the women out-lived several husbands. Then my Great-Aunt Sal Lyford, the skinny lady(grandmother's half sister, and grandfather's cousin-in-law, I think), behind my Great Aunt is, I believe my Aunt Agnus Lundy(at the top of the steps) I remember them all, except my Great Grandmother on my Mom's side.

Of course my mind is possibly mixing up my Granny Ascott with my Nanny's Mom.
ARGGG!
I only know my Mom's two Grandmothers from photos, I don't remember them from my life.

The Last Blast of Colour Before Fall Sets In

I am posting late today because Carl and I were out a better part of the day, in the back yard cutting down and digging up plants.
I purchased some purple and pink varigated Tulips, some pink Daffodils and some varigated Narcissis in the back garden
We also have put in some yellow Tulips.
Last year we revamped all of the gardens, front and back. We put in huge beds of bulbs in the front, but we only put one bed of Narcissis in the back, that was left over when we finished the front.
I have to plant all of my bulbs really deep, cuz we have a squirrel problem here.
I lost no bulbs last year to the squirrels, so I was ready to bulb-up the back garden.
So now the garden along our back fence has 6 large beds of bulbs.
I have one bed of bulbs on the side garden.
I may add more on the side later this fall.
I didn't want to over purchase bulbs and have no time to put them in, so I was lean on the bulb shopping while our weeks have been plagued with rain.
We have one corner of the garden(by the waterfall) that is flooded, so it needs another week before we can clean back there.
The front we finished earlier, and our last task for coming weeks is to move a few perennials from near the back wall of the house to other parts of the yard.
I want to take out all the perennials from there, cuz I think we will build a deck in the spring.
(at least I am hoping we can- its always about the money)

I deliberated long about my contribution. I told other participants I blog with that I would only put in a photo of my younger boobies. I didn't find that photo.(not naked if you are wondering)
So I took a current photo of my 43 yr old boobies.
I thought that it was important that my boobies get shown.
Why?
In 1996 I had a lumpectomy. I was fortunate that I did not have Cancer(after the pathology was tested). There was a large(1/4) portion of one of my breasts removed anyhow.
In 1997 I had reconstructive shaping surgery done(without implant)
My boobies look good! No one would even know.
Maybe someone who is worried about their breast shape and is trying to hold off surgery, because they feel like they will not look good after, would change their mind if they saw my boobies look great!



Go to the site via the ribbon, look for my boobies in the pink. They are in a violet sparkly bra, and cuz they are covered anyone can view them.
But if you go, and can afford to donate to see the uncovered ones please do it!
I want everyone's Cancer Scare in the future to have the same outcome as mine!
We cannot do that without research!

I am doing this in Memory of my Nanny who died of Breast Cancer complications when I was 15, and my best friend Annie-Fanny who died of Breast Cancer at age 40, leaving her daughters behind, and alone.
