On Monday we finally got real snow. The first real snow of the winter, and it ended up a "snow day". A snow day is a day where the roads are too icy for the buses to run. Schools hold no classes, and folks that commute from the countryside will end up with a forced day off, or if they are lucky, they can work remotely from home.
We didn't get a huge amount of snow. What we did get was about four hours of ice pellets that formed a slippery barrier between the snow and the roads. The snow that fell is crisp snow-the kind that squeaks because it is so cold.
Our temperatures are way below zero Celsius, probably about 20F. The wind is very cold, and there are cold weather warnings throughout Ontario. The weather mass basically covers all of Ontario, part of Manitoba and east through Quebec, and touches the eastern seaboard.
Tuesday there was school. Not because the roads were better, but because we have about 1 1/2 inches of packed snow for buses to get traction on now. Outside the city limits you will find that only the big roads will be clean down to bare pavement. The residential, rural and small roads will have a layer of packed snow for traction with a bit of sand on it put on by the region.

You guys got it worse than us...we got pure snow and NO SNOW DAY! My husband was happy to go skiing in Barrie, though! I'm still waiting for a huge blizzard and dump just to liven things up...and so I can make turkey soup fromThanksgiving leftovers!
